Map — The Supply Chain of Abandonment
Abandonment doesn’t happen in one place at one time. Alongside all reported cargo ships abandoned in 2021, this map shows their last journey prior to abandonment, the offices of the companies that own the ships, where the ship is flagged to, and where the stranded seafarers that move the world's goods call home.
By doing so it seeks to show the exploded geography of abandonment, the constellations of ownership and jurisdictional webs that facilitate total neglect.
You can toggle the different data categories using the panel on the bottom right This map builds on the dataset compiled by the Abandoned Seafarer Mapping Project. Further data come from the ILO (International Labour Organisation 2022), MarineTraffic, and IMO (International Maritime Organisation 2022).
